Eager N00bie
Hey folks,
The Quick: N00bie soliciting free mentoring. You may stop reading now.
As the various profiles have stated, I'm brand new to Drupal and can't wait to be productive. I'm a little frustrated with the learning curve. Over the past three weeks I've accumulated a daunting bookmark collection to tutorials; patch quirks; webcasts; site recipes etc. I started reading the Pro Drupal Dev book and had to skip ahead after the first 8 chapters!
I'm not a web developer by trade but I do need what Drupal can do. All the web dev' I do is probono for non-profits etc. I have a community project in mind that needs a jumpstart. I do not have the funds to pay for a tutor so I'm looking for a mentor who is not all about the money (if I wanted a hired gun I'd have gone to dice.com!)
Basically I'm looking for someone to parse my ideas for fit and scope before helping me actually do it. If it seems so easy to me what's my problem type of thing. I'm pretty sure I'll "get it" once the basic vocab and terms are defined.
Interested in an eco-friendly project? If you have available bandwidth please contact me to discuss the high-level stuff.
I'll be at the mobile device meeting wearing my tinfoil hat ;)
Cheers.

Update
For those who don't know yet, we have decided to do another monthly meetup based on the interest in this thread as well as interest expressed during the primary meeting. For the time being, I believe the details will be announced using the existing ADUG Meetup.com Site. The link is in the banner of the home page on this site, so be sure to sign up to receive announcements of upcoming meetings.
We are envisioning the format to be mini workshops, and we may tackle hands-on tasks such as Drupal installation, module installation, database and site backup, and in-depth looks at specific modules among others. If there is something about Drupal that is stumping you, bring your questions - from installing to theming to taxonomy. Also, if you know everything there is to know about Drupal and want to share your knowledge with those of us who don't, bless you and yes, by all means, come and join us.
The first meeting will be held on Thursday, May 6th at Manuel’s Tavern in Atlanta, in the Eagle’s Nest meeting room (to the right and upstairs, from the back entrance) at 7:30 pm.
I hope to see you there.
Thanks,
Kevin
Tuesday night confirmation
Kevin -
Is this May 6 Tuesday meeting still on? The post says Thursday, May 6 - but I'm thinking the day and the date mismatch is just an oversight... I do it all the time myself.
I'm new to both Drupal and Drupal Atlanta. This meeting format sounds great and I'm interested in attending but without seeing it on the ADUG Meetup.com site, I thought I'd ask. We would be coming in from Athens and since gas is going to cost $3 million for the trip, it'd be best to confirm this.
Thanks,
Janet
Re: Tuesday night confirmation
Janet,
Good questions. I actually copied the date and time details from an email I received regarding the first meeting, so I actually don't know myself. Keep an eye out here and on the ADUG Meetup.com site for clarification. I just went back and read the email again, and it appears that Tuesday May 6 is the correct day based on other info in the email. In fact, I'm confident enough that I'm going to make the trip over from my job in Alpharetta before going home to Lawrenceville. Not as far as your drive I know, so if you want a final confirmation before you make the drive, feel free to give me a call. My cell phone number is 770-335-7105.

We can make this happen
We actually have several people who would like to mentor/co-mentor. We really just need an organizer and a location (with workspace and Internet access, etc.).
If you find those two, we can probably get between 5-10 people together on a regular basis to roll up sleeves and share knowledge. Most of these people don't consider themselves expert, but are on the learning curve. But collectively, I think they have a significant body of knowledge.
Let me know if anyone is interested in this idea. We have been working on this for some months, but the group has not yet come together.
Willing to help
I've only been using Drupal since October 2007, but my situation required me to jump in the deep end and sink or swim. I made some beginner mistakes but worked through them and probably learned a lot more effectively that way. Like you, I went through pages of tutorials, hours of podcasts, and the Drupal Pro Development Book, but as with anything, things really didn't click until I started to try to apply the concepts.
I'm not looking to get paid to put in time helping someone because I feel that there's a built in reward and that learning increases exponentially when teaching.
Just reply back here if you're still interested and we can exchange contact info.

I am looking too!
I myself am really interested in Drupal for social networking website idea that I have come up with. Drupal and its book have been very confusing for me to understand. I was wondering if you were ever successful in finding someone who was not looking for money to help you in your matter. I have not yet to find anyone who was looking for a profit. I do not have the funds to pay someone myself and would really wish to find someone to help me to understand how to do this on my own. I know this was months back but a lot can change since then. So please let me know any information that would be helpful in my situation.
Thanks,
CipherD
Tuesday May 6 is the correct date
This meeting was originally planned for May 1st (a Thursday), but was changed in order not to interfere with other web development meetings. Thus the confusion.
The final and correct date is Tuesday May 6th, as the announcement shows.
See you there!
